Love @ First Site: A Novel $9.39 Spunky, sweet-natured Jessica Monroe is 34 years old and perfectly happy being single. A producer at a top-rated morning show with a coterie of fun friends and a busy nightlife, she isn’t in any rush to meet a man. Her girlfriends, however, disapprove. And when they secretly place a personal ad on a hot singles Web site on her behalf, Jess is reluctantly hurtled into the topsy-turvy world of online dating, where frogs masquerade as princes but your soul mate might be just one click away. A laugh-out-loud whirlwind of disastrous dates ensues, from Simon, who seems dreamy over e-mail but ditches her at the dinner table, leaving her with the bill, to Graham, a self-described "Ferrari driver" who turns out to be a car salesman with several (old, fat, bald, creepy, cheap, stuck-up) men in between. When an unforeseen event turns her world upside down, Jess starts to wonder if the qualities she thinks she wants in a man are what she ultimately needs. And whether, as a new mystery suitor appears in her e-mail in-box, Cupid has other possibilities up his sleeve . . . With her sparkling sensibility and brilliant knack for rendering the foibles of modern love in a fresh, unforgettable way, Jane Moore has become one of the fastest-growing names in contemporary women’s fiction. Told with her signature wit, wisdom, and sass, Love @ First Site is an irresistible tale about what happens when we start to look for love between the lines on a computer screen–and a winning, unputdownable look at contemporary romance. From the Hardcover edition. |

Cliff Johnson Games: The Fool’s Errand, 3 in Three, the Fool and His Money, at the Carnival, $100,000 Challenge, Disney’s Cartoon Arcade $8.59 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Fool’s Errand is a 1987 computer game by Cliff Johnson. It is a meta-puzzle game with storytelling, visual puzzles and a cryptic treasure map. It is the tale of a wandering Fool who seeks his fortune in the Land of Tarot and braves the enchantments of the High Priestess. According to Johnson, a sequel, titled The Fool and His Money, is scheduled for release sometime after October 2010. The game was originally written for the Apple Macintosh and ported to MS-DOS, Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. The ports add color, but in a lower resolution (320×200, as opposed to the original version’s 512×342). Johnson’s site advises PC-based players to download the Macintosh version and play using an emulator, specifically mentioning Executor, but other open source emulators will work as well. The non-Macintosh versions of the game were protected by a symbol-based code wheel. The version offered free of charge given by the author has this mechanism disabled: the challenge screen still appears, but any answer is accepted. Computer Gaming World had high praise for the game, saying “You feel like you’re matching wits with the author directly, instead of playing “hunt the parser.”" The Fool’s Errand won the following awards: The game is structured as a storybook divided into five parts, each containing a large number of different chapters; the storybook can be paged through and read as continuous prose on screen. However, not every chapter is available at the start of the game, and those chapters which are available are not consecutive. Many chapters have a puzzle (called an enchantment) associated with them; completing such a puzzle unlocks further chapter(s). Every chapter is either named after a tarot card in the Major Arcana or a name giv… More: |

Gaming Matters: Art, Science, Magic, and the Computer Game Medium $30.94 In his 2004 book Game Work, Ken S. McAllister proposed a rigorous critical methodology for the discussion of the “video game complex”—the games themselves, their players, the industry that produces them, and those who review and market them. Games, McAllister demonstrated, are viewed and discussed very differently by different factions: as an economic force, as narrative texts, as a facet of popular culture, as a psychological playground, as an ethical and moral force, even as a tool for military training. In Gaming Matters, McAllister and coauthor Judd Ruggill turn from the broader discussion of video game rhetoric to study the video game itself as a medium and the specific features that give rise to games as similar and yet diverse as Pong, Tomb Raider, and Halo. In short, what defines the computer game itself as a medium distinct from all others? Each chapter takes up a different fundamental characteristic of the medium. Games are:• Idiosyncratic, and thus difficult to apprehend using the traditional tools of media study• Irreconcilable, or complex to such a degree that developers, players, and scholars have contradictory ways of describing them• Boring, and therefore obligated to constantly make demandson players’ attention• Anachronistic, or built on age-old tropes and forms of playwhile ironically bound to the most advanced technologies• Duplicitous, or dependent on truth-telling rhetoric even when they are about fictions, fantasies, or lies• Work, or are often better understood as labor rather than play• Alchemical, despite seeming all-too mechanical or predictableVideo games are now inarguably a major site of worldwide cultural production. Gaming Matters will neither flatter game enthusiasts nor embolden game detractors in their assessments. But it will provide a vocabulary through which games can be discussed in |
