One of the first things that parents need to learn about video games is the ESRB ratings. However, even adult gamers can benefit from this rating system and understanding what it means. The ESRB is the gaming industry’s rating system that was developed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. This is information that’s needed in order to make an intelligent decision when buying video games. The ratings on the video games help you determine what age group the game is suited for by providing information concerning the content of the game.
The ESRB rating is divided into two parts. The “rating symbols” are designed to provide the consumer with an idea of which age group the game would be appropriate for. The “content descriptors” are designed to indicate certain elements that may be an interest or something that you should be aware of. These particular elements are usually the parts of the game that earned it the rating it was giving.
According to the ESRB the video game rating symbols are as follows:
• EC (Early Childhood)- These games are suited for anyone age three and up and do not contain anything that parents should be concerned with.
• E (Everyone)- These games are suitable for anyone age six and up. However, these games can contain fantasy, cartoons, mild language and some mild violence.
• E10 (Everyone 10 and up)- These games are similar to the ones that fall under the E rating but the content may be more suggestive. Therefore, its suggested the players be at least ten years old or older to play.
• T (Teen)- The content in these games may be suitable for players thirteen years of age or older. The humor may be crude and the player may be subjected to minimal blood, violence, strong language and suggestive themes.
• M (Mature)- Any game rated M is not suitable for anyone under the age of seventeen. The violence may be intense in these games and they may have a lot of blood and gore scenes along with strong language and sexual content.
• AO (Adults Only)- If the game is rated AO then it should not be played by anyone under the age of eighteen. There may be prolonged scenes that involve sexual content, nudity or intense violence.
• RP (Rating Pending)- The only time you’ll see this symbol is when the game is being advertised and has not actually been released yet. It means that the game has been submitted to the ESRB for a rating but it has not been rated at this time. However, it will be given a rating before it’s released for sale.
The ESRB content descriptors provide the player or parent with more important details about the game that will help you decide if it’s something you want to play or if it’s suitable for any child you may be considering buying the game for. This information is usually listed on the back of the package the game comes in. Some of the areas covered by the content descriptors that show reference to or images of certain items or scenes are listed below:
• References made to or images of alcohol, tobacco and drugs
• Animated or unrealistic blood
• Real Blood
• Blood and gore that includes mutilation of bodies
• Cartoon violence
• Fantasy violence
• Crude humor
• Comic mischief with suggestive or slapstick humor
• Intense violence that is graphic and realistic
• Mature humor involving sexual references
• Partial or full nudity
• Mild to strong sexual content, themes and violence
• Mild to explicit use of profanity
• Use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs
• Music that refers to violence, sex, profanity and alcohol or drug use
• Simulated and real gambling
• Suggestive or provocative materials
• Aggressive violence containing dismemberments and other violent acts
The content descriptor will be preceded by the terms “mild” or “strong” to indicate the intensity, frequency and the severity of the action it precedes. This will help you determine how much violence, nudity, profanity, etc is in the game.
This information can help parents determine if they want their child to play the game or not. Some parents don’t mind if their child plays a game with some violence but they may not want them to be subjected to sexual content or the use of drugs and alcohol. Some parents may approve mild content but would not approve of strong content. It is always recommended that the parent preview the game in addition to just reading the rating that is listed by the ESRB.
The video game ESRB ratings and content descriptors can be very useful but it’s not meant to be used sorely for telling consumers what to buy or not buy. The best way to decide if a game is right for your family is by playing it yourself to see exactly what content it has and whether or not it’s suitable for your you and your family.
Online games are handled a little differently. They will have a notice attached that reads “Online Interaction Not Rated by the ESRB”. This means that the game you are about to play or allow your child to play may contain content that is not yet covered by the ESRB ratings. This would include user-generated content such as chat programs that involve text, video and audio.

Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and $6.99 Listening to pundits and politicians, you’d think that the relationship between violent video games and aggressive behavior in children is clear. Children who play violent video games are more likely to be socially isolated and have poor interpersonal skills. Violent games can trigger real-world violence. The best way to protect our kids is to keep them away from games such as Grand Theft Auto that are rated M for Mature. Right? Wrong. In fact, many parents are worried about the wrong things! In 2004, Lawrence Kutner, PhD, and Cheryl K. Olson, ScD, cofounders and directors of the Harvard Medical School Center for Mental Health and Media, began a $1.5 million federally funded study on the effects of video games. In contrast to previous research, their study focused on real children and families in real situations. What they found surprised, encouraged and sometimes disturbed them: their findings conform to the views of neither the alarmists nor the video game industry boosters. In Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth about Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do, Kutner and Olson untangle the web of politics, marketing, advocacy and flawed or misconstrued studies that until now have shaped parents’ concerns. Instead of offering a one-size-fits-all prescription, Grand Theft Childhood gives the information you need to decide how you want to handle this sensitive issue in your own family. You’ll learn when — and what kinds of — video games can be harmful, when they can serve as important social or learning tools and how to create and enforce game-playing rules in your household. You’ll find out what’s really in the games your children play and when to worry about your children playing with strangers on the Internet. You’ll understand how games are rated, how to make best use of ratings and the potentially important information that ratings don’t provide. Grand Theft Childhood takes video games out of |

Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games and What Parents Can Do By Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl Olson $17.99 Listening to pundits and politicians, you’d think that the relationship between violent video games and aggressive behavior in children is clear.
Project Gotham Racing 4 $19.99 Project Gotham Racing makes its second appearance on Xbox 360 with several key additions, from a dynamically changing weather system to the option of racing motorcycles alongside the iconic sports cars. The predecessor’s five cities have been updated with new visual effects and enhancements, including red-and-white “rumble strips” to more easily identify approaching turns, and drivers can now tear up the streets in four international locales: Macau, St. Petersburg, Shanghai, and Quebec. A tenth venue, the fictitious Michelin Test Track, is patterned after traditional NASCAR courses for special invitational events in the single-player career mode. The kudos system of earning points for flashy moves returns, but now players will receive star ratings for combos and computer AI drivers will more aggressively compete for kudos. The career mode is more fleshed out and personalized compared to previous versions, with loyal fans following your driver to each event, wearing clothing with your logo or waving your home country’s flag, and with a television-style atmosphere complete with camera crews and running commentary. The licensed vehicle list has expanded to 120 models, including such classics as a Corvette Sting Ray, a Maserati 250F, a Toyota Supra Turbo, and a DeLorean DMC-12. In addition to the career mode (which spans 200 races and includes new garages for storing vehicles), users can participate in 70 arcade-style events or compete in eight-player online races via Xbox Live. New event types include “survivor” and “superstar,” with the latter testing a player’s skill in completing tricks within time limits. A new “Team Play” online mode has four friends creating a racing team and working together to take out other top-ranked teams. The Gotham TV option introduced in PGR 3 also returns with an “on demand” feature that not only lets users share photos and streaming video, but also search for specific footage or players by keyword. ~ Scott Alan Marriott,… |
